Minimum Requirements:

High School diploma or its equivalent AND a Pharmacy Technician Certificate OR One (1) year of experience working as a Pharmacy Technician.

Must have current CPR/BLS certification at time of appointment.

Act 33/34 clearances are required prior to appointment at the cost of the applicant.

It is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status, and drug/medical examinations as required for the position. The pre-employment drug screen must be completed within 48 hours of the acceptance of the conditional offer of employment.


Position Summary:

 The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for inputting medications electronically, filling, packaging and delivering medication orders, and inventorying and recording pharmaceuticals to be dispensed to inmates at the Allegheny County Jail. All work is performed in accordance with Federal, state and local standards and the regulations that govern correctional facilities. 



Overview:


Duties:

  • Inputs medication and ancillary orders via computer or other means into patients' medical records.
  • Fills and packages medications under appropriate supervision and direction.
  • Delivers medication orders to locations/pods within the facility.
  • Conducts/ assists in inventorying of all pharmaceuticals to ensure that none are outdated and that an adequate supply is available based on patient needs.
  • Contacts various divisions within the Jail to clarify medication orders under direct supervision.
  • Utilizes technology to obtain and/or provide information, and compiles data for narrative and statistical reports and surveys.
  • Answers questions and inquiries from direct care staff on status of medication orders.
  • Conducts routine checks of equipment and supplies to include refrigerators, medication carts and rooms for expired medications and cleanliness; checks emergency boxes for proper replacement medications; removes expired medication, replenishes stock and ensures proper labeling.
  • Accounts for the return and proper destruction of discontinued or out of date medications.
  • Employs necessary safeguards and diligence in dispensing and disposing of controlled medications.
  • Accounts for the receipt of all medication shipments and billing for medical equipment from suppliers. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Data entry, filling, packaging, inventorying and recording of pharmaceuticals or other dispensed items.

Skill in:


Ability to:

  • Interact with inmates.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of all medications received and orders filled.
  • Communicate and establish effective working relationships with all levels of staff.
  • Work shifts in a 24/7 facility.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and manage multiple tasks in a stressful environment.
  • Utilize Microsoft Suite, computer based pharmaceutical programs and standard office equipment as required.
