Position Title: Fire Instructor

Salary: $66,860.54 per year

Minimum Requirements:
  • Associate’s degree in Business, Fire Science, Emergency Management or a related field, or
  • At least two (2) years of equivalent training and job experience (i.e. fire services personnel management including being a PA State Fire Academy Instructor).


Applicants must also have the following certifications and licenses prior to appointment:


  • PA State Fire Academy Suppression Instructor.
  • IFSAC/PRO-BOARD Fire Fighter II
  • IFSAC/PRO-BOARD Fire Instructor I certification, or higher.
  • IFSAC/PRO-BOARD for areas of instruction.
  • A current PA driver’s License and maintain it throughout employment.
  • Class B CDL with air brake and tank endorsement or acquire it within one year of appointment.
  • A current PA Department of Health Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification
  • Valid clearances (PA Child Abuse History, PA State Police Criminal Background Check, FBI Criminal Background Check).


Applicants with the following qualifications are preferred:


  • IFSAC/PRO-BOARD Fire Instructor II certification, or higher.
  • PA State Fire Academy Suppression Instructor.
  • Class B CDL with air brake and tank endorsement.
  • PA Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) or higher.


It is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status, and drug/medical examinations as required for the position. The pre-employment drug screen must be completed within 48 hours of the acceptance of the conditional offer of employment.


Position Summary:

The fire instructor is responsible for delivering training courses in a classroom setting, hands-on practical sessions, and online/distance environments. They will also be responsible for scheduling training courses in both a resident and outreach format to the first response community of Allegheny County. This position will also provide supervision of visiting instructors, and monitor student and visiting instructor activities to ensure quality and safety standards are maintained. Additionally, the fire instructor will maintain tools, equipment and apparatus assigned to the division. The fire instructor will also keep the learning environment (classrooms and training field) in good working order. The fire instructor will occasionally work at and with staff from the Emergency Operations Center, and in the field providing emergency response capabilities, as needed.



Overview:


Duties:

  • Ensures a customer focused approach to instruction, scheduling and supervision of Academy programs.
  • Enforces County, State, Federal and NFPA policies, standards, regulations, and statutes, as applied to emergency services instruction and training.
  • Communicates effectively with students, visiting instructors, staff and customers, verbally, and in writing, utilizing the chain of command, as needed.
  • Performs routine maintenance on Fire Academy resources as needed.
  • Works shifts to include daylight, evening and overnight to facilitate instructional needs.
  • Responds to callouts for emergencies and disasters and may work up to 24-hour shifts, as needed.
  • Delivers instruction in both classrooms, distant/online, and field settings.
  • Maintains tools, equipment and apparatuses assigned to the fire academy division.
  • Retains all professional certifications related to emergency services.
  • Performs related duties as assigned and required.

  • Deliver training via distance and online platforms.
  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Maintain fire equipment used in instruction.
  • Be exposed to all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold, wetness/humidity.
  • Operate firefighting apparatus
  • Lift and carry heavy objects up to 100 pounds, climb ladders, scale and rappel buildings, ascend ropes, and perform various emergency operations required to deliver a multi-disciplinary training curriculum
  • Wear job-specific Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including the potential use of self-contained breathing apparatus, and structural firefighting turn out gear in accordance with manufacturer specifications and applicable codes and standards.
  • Work in a live fire training facility with potential immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) atmospheric conditions and high heat levels
  • Be physically able to perform all skills required of first responders in the field
  • Successfully complete a fitness for duty evaluation as needed.
  • Drive and operate fire engines, trucks, and mobile command post; must be able to obtain a county certification to operate County owned vehicles.

Residency: Allegheny County within 1 year.
