Minimum Requirements:
- A high school diploma AND five (5) years of experience in security operations within a medium/maximum correctional facility, to include three (3) years of experience as a first-line supervisor or higher within the correctional chain of command.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. Education may not be substituted for supervisory experience.
It is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status, and drug/medical examinations as required for the position. Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Major, the Captain is responsible for ensuring the overall safety, custody, and security of the incarcerated individual population, staff, visitors, and the public. The incumbent is also responsible for maintaining facility-wide operations and security, and for supervising Sergeants and all security staff during shift operations.

Duties:
- Performs supervisory tasks in all aspects of the job, including instructing, assigning, and reviewing work, planning, maintaining standards, coordinating activities, allocating personnel, and making recommendations for transferring, promoting, and disciplining.
- Inspects the facility daily to ensure conformity with policies, procedures, and general operational guidelines.
- Processes a variety of documents and reports on performance on the job, such as time sheets, requisitions, evaluations, daily reports, and incident reports.
- Ensures that the housing pods comply with security guidelines.
- Assumes delegated responsibility for custody and security of assigned incarcerated individuals, buildings, grounds, and operations.
- Reviews and prepares reports and correspondence.
- Oversees and reviews the work of staff.
- Conducts performance evaluations.
- Performs and directs investigations.
- Participates in crisis intervention as needed.
- Develops or makes recommendations on the development of policies and standards.
- Ensures that safety and sanitary conditions are being maintained; evaluates the effectiveness of security; and determines if rules, procedures, and directives are being followed through physical inspections.
- Monitors and manages department resources, equipment, overtime, and leave usage.
- When directed, performs the duties of the Chief Deputy Warden/Warden in their absence and/or performs other related duties as required or requested.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Correctional custody principles, practices, methods, and techniques.
- Laws and legal requirements relating to the operation of correctional facilities.
- Methods and practices of correction facilities, including individual and group attitudes and behavior of incarcerated individuals.
- Prison rules, regulations, and requirements for control of incarcerated individuals.
Skill in:
- Microsoft Office products.
Ability to:
- Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Supervise Sergeants and other security staff.
- Utilize computers as input and output devices.
- Work all shifts.
- Work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Work mandatory overtime in cases of emergency.
Residency:
Not required to live in Allegheny County
