Position Title: Deputy Director, Bureau of Environmental Protection

Salary: $105,000.00 - $114,610.70

Minimum Requirements:

One year of experience as an Environmental Health Administrator III or Air Quality Program Manager.

OR

Master’s Degree in Public Health with a major concentration in Environmental Health or a field related to environmental health and six (6) years of professional environmental health or environmental protection work experience, including four (4) years in management which must include direct supervision of staff.

OR

Bachelor’s Degree with major course work in the biological sciences, sanitary sciences, chemistry or other fields closely related to environmental health and seven (7) years of professional environmental health work including four (4) years in management which must include direct supervision of staff.

OR

An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Condition of Employment

Position Summary:

This is executive environmental protection work which involves developing, coordinating and evaluating the major County-wide programs in environmental protection.

An employee in this class has executive and consultative responsibilities for planning, organizing, and for maintaining high level professional performance by the environmental protection staff on both a generalized and a specialty basis. The work involves continuous analysis and appraisal of County-wide environmental protection programs with the objective of developing policy, procedures, and techniques to achieve maximum professional quality and effectiveness of environmental protection services. An important aspect of the work is participation in Health Department policy development, and the enlisting of community support and stimulation of interest in environmental protection. Supervision is exercised over a staff of program managers or other subordinate managers. An employee in this class with executive responsibility for the Bureau of Environmental Protection is expected to exercise independent professional judgment and initiative and receives general administrative directions from the Director.



Overview:


Duties:

  • To plan, develop and coordinate the overall environmental protection programs including but not limited to air quality, solid waste management.
  • To formulate, interpret and implement policy in carrying out the objective of the environmental protection programs.
  • To supervise a staff of Program Managers who are responsible for planning, consulting, coordinating and evaluating public health activities in assigned areas.
  • To coordinate the environmental protection programs with other departmental programs, and other governmental units, agencies and industry.
  • To plan or direct the planning of budgets, personnel requirements, facilities and services for the overall programs of environmental protection.
  • To confer with environmental protection staff and executive leadership to explain policies, to review work progress and to instruct staff in new and revised procedures.
  • To plan and formulate rules and regulations related to environmental protection controls and to recommend appropriate legislation.
  • Responds to Public Health emergencies as assigned by the Health Department.
  • Performs other duties as required or requested.
