Minimum Requirements:
- Doctor of Pharmacy degree AND four (4) years’ experience in inpatient or ambulatory care pharmacy, or
- Doctor of Pharmacy degree AND completion of a first-year ambulatory care residency.
- Completion of a second-year residency in ambulatory care, psychiatry, or substance use is preferred.
Must be 18 years of age or older. Must have ACT33/34 clearance prior to appointment. CPR/BLS certification is required within 6 months of hire.

Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Deputy Warden of Health Services, the Pharmacist performs professional and administrative duties, including planning, organizing, and directing the complete operation of the Allegheny County Jail pharmacy. The pharmacy encompasses multiple clinical programs, which include a focus on SUD (substance use disorders). The incumbent is responsible for dispensing drugs and pharmaceutical supplies, and for administering the requisition, receipt, inspection, refrigerated storage, inventory control, and shipment of a heavy volume of drugs and clinical supplies in support of the population of the Allegheny County Jail. Professional duties must be performed in accordance with accepted pharmaceutical standards and practices. The pharmacist oversees all contract pharmacists. General supervision and technical advice are received from Allegheny County Jail (ACJ) medical providers.
Overview:
Duties:
- Coordinates patient treatment plans with ACJ physicians and care team and optimizes medication treatment regimens based on appropriate indication, safety, efficacy, and adherence.
- Consults on pharmacy matters with other health professionals of the Allegheny County Jail and furnishes information concerning medications to physicians, fellows, nurses, and others.
- Performs medication histories, triages patient medication-related needs, and when needed, coordinates care between patients’ pharmacies and providers.
- Reviews and updates pharmacy policies and procedures and optimizes documentation for medication reconciliation and medication history processes.
- Submits medication refills to the main pharmacy for delivery.
- Reviews to ensure evidence-based and up-to-date recommendations are made to medication/vaccine standing orders/polypharmacy considerations.
- Performs continuous quality improvement on EHR (electronic health record) documentation for ongoing clinical pharmacy patient care.
- Supports Clinical Services Bureau programs with drug orders.
- Works with pharmacy wholesalers for medication supply management and supports clinical teams with drug shortages and backorders.
- Relays prevalent clinical patient care information to all pharmacy partners.
- Identifies funding opportunities to support collaborations between community pharmacies, Federally Qualified Healthcare Centers (FQHC), and health departments to support public health initiatives (e.g., coordination of public health services, community health worker training for pharmacy staff).
- Supports efforts around emergency preparedness planning and the pharmacy’s role in medical countermeasure response and participates in the planning and execution of exercises and drills that support ACJ disaster planning.
- Prepares correspondence to drug and clinical supplies contractors and vendors relating to errors or discrepancies in products, shipments, exchanges, credits, etc.
- Maintains an ongoing storage and inventory-control program.
- Controls the shipment and logistics activities required to distribute drugs and supplies to appropriate locations in support of programs and SUD regulations.
- Assists with the implementation of billing for pharmacy services.
- Performs related duties as requested or required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Current principles and practices of pharmacy and pharmacology.
- Federal and State laws regulating the practice of pharmacy.
- Procurement practices in the field of drugs and clinical supplies, the proper methods of distribution, requisition, inventory control and refrigerated storage, and the reliability of companies supplying these items.
- Administrative and supervisory practices in the management of a pharmacy.
Skill in:
- Microsoft Office products.
