Minimum Requirements:
  • High School diploma or its equivalent AND a Phlebotomy Training Certificate or,
  • High School diploma or its equivalent AND one (1) year of experience performing lab draws, specimen collection, etc.


Must have current CPR/BLS certification upon hire. Act 33/34 clearances are required prior to appointment at the cost of the applicant.

It is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status, and drug/medical examinations as required for the position. The pre-employment drug screen must be completed within 48 hours of the acceptance of the conditional offer of employment.


Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Clinic Manager, the phlebotomist will use standard technique for vein punctures, heel sticks, and finger sticks to complete lab orders. The incumbent may be required to provide instruction or assistance with the collection of other non-blood specimens. This position will work daylight hours, Monday- Friday, with occasionally varied shifts to ensure coverage needs are met.



Overview:


Duties:

  • Collects and processes patient specimens in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures within expected timeframes while ensuring a safe environment within the facility.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of the work area and adequate supplies for efficient laboratory operations.
  • Performs laboratory support duties (e.g., order entry, registration, specimen receiving, etc.) to ensure efficient operations.
  • Coordinates with local lab and Health Department to process tests on specimens collected from incarcerated individuals.
  • Conducts and assists with the inventorying of all laboratory supplies to confirm they are within expiry and that an adequate supply is available.
  • Routinely checks equipment and supplies, including refrigerators and centrifuges, to ensure they are functioning correctly.
  • Audits and completes sharps logs in compliance with industry standards.
  • Maintains and completes appropriate paperwork including requisitions according to organization standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

  • Maintain accurate and complete records of completed labs and specimens.
  • Communicate and establish effective working relationships with all levels of staff, including off-site laboratories.
  • Work shifts in a 24/7 facility.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and manage multiple tasks in a controlled environment.
  • Effectively learn and utilize County computer systems and applications.
  • Complete work precisely using appropriate attention to detail.
  • Enter data accurately and efficiently.

Residency: Not required to live in Allegheny County
