Minimum Requirements:

Certificate or diploma as a Medical Assistant, or Associate in Science as a Medical Assistant from an accredited MA Program and accredited as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).

Condition of Employment

Allegheny County Civil Service Employees (Non-ACHD)

Regular or probationary employees of County Departments currently in this classification, hired under a State Civil Service System, who apply for this position will not be considered as Open Competitive applicants. Those employees selected for transfer to the Allegheny County Health Department will be considered to have resigned their Civil Service status from the Department in which they are currently working and will be required to complete a probationary period with the Health Department. This announcement may be modified, amended or canceled by the Allegheny County Health Department at any time.

Purpose

To establish open competitive and promotional eligible lists for use in making merit system appointments in the Allegheny County Health Department. The list will contain the names of successful candidates ranked in the order of final earned ratings. The list will be in effect for one (1) year unless previously exhausted or superseded.

In the ranking, open competitive applicants qualifying for Veteran’s Preference receive an additional ten points on the final earned rating. Form DD-214 must be attached to the application form for consideration for Veteran’s Preference. Determination of Veteran’s Preference is made in accordance with State Civil Service Policy.

Position Summary:

This is public health work assisting physicians and other health care providers in providing health services for patients. An employee in this class provides services directly to patients in a medical office, public health or community setting. Work involves the preparation and maintenance of treatment areas, the operation of clinical equipment and the performance of routine diagnostic tests. The employee receives assignments from a Public Health Nurse or other professional and is supervised by a Public Health Nurse Supervisor or other professional supervisor, who reviews work for completion, and conformance with medical, nursing and public health program standards.

Duties:

  • Assists with examinations and treatments while practicing universal precautions.
  • Prepares and maintains examination and treatment areas.
  • Performs physical assessment of patients including urine specimen collection and phlebotomy for STI testing.
  • Prepares and processes laboratory specimens.
  • Identifies the needs of patients and exchanges information with nurses and providers about patients.
  • Operates and maintains office and clinical equipment.
  • Records patient data accurately, including the medication record.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Performs routine diagnostic tests and administers medications as ordered by a provider.
  • Maintains inventory of office and clinical supplies and medications.
  • Maintains patient records in electronic medical system.
  • Uses medical terminology correctly.
  • Educates patients concerning testing, treatment, and medications.
  • Assists patients in accessing community resources.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
  • Responds to public health emergencies.
