Top Salary Starting at 41 months of service: $107,967.00 per year $8,997.25 per month $51.9072 per hour

In order to be eligible to take the Police Officer written examination, applicants MUST:        

• be a United States Citizen

• have a high school diploma or a GED equivalent

• be at least 18 years of age

 Written Test Information:

Test Date: February 15, 2025. Time of the test: 9:00 a.m.

Study Guide: The department of Human Resources will e-mail all eligible applicants the test vendor study guide at the conclusion of the application period on Monday, February 3, 2025.

It is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status, and drug/medical examinations as required for the position. The pre-employment drug screen must be completed within 48 hours of the acceptance of the conditional offer of employment.


Position Summary:

An Allegheny County Patrol Officer provides high quality police patrol service to the patrons and citizens of Allegheny County. This position provides professional police support to other law enforcement agencies operating in local municipalities. The Uniform District Patrol Officer provides security to all Allegheny County-owned and/or operated property, maintains order, and provides for the safety of all persons utilizing the property. It is equally important to maintain high visibility in all areas while performing patrol duties in order to provide general assistance and information to the public. This position also enforces Allegheny County Ordinances, the Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Code, and the Pennsylvania Crimes Code. Homicide, General Investigations, and Narcotics divisions provide assistance to all local municipalities in Allegheny County.

  • Nelson Denny Reading Test (applicable to eligible applicants who need to attend the Allegheny County Police Academy)
  • Medical Examination
  • Entry into the Allegheny County Police Academy, if applicable, to those hired

Veterans’ Preference: Veterans’ Preference will be awarded to eligible candidates. Discharge and separation papers (DD214) must show character of discharge and be submitted online when completing the application. Applicants claiming Veterans’ Preference for a deceased spouse must submit a copy of the death certificate. Military or National Guard reservists must provide an original Statement of Service letter from their current Reserve or National Guard Commanding Officer at the rank of Colonel (Army, Air Force, or Marine), Captain (Navy or Coast Guard) or higher. The letter must include:

  • A statement that characterizes your current or most recent service (i.e., honorable or under honorable conditions)
  • Date Military or National Guard reserve began
  • Completion date of Military reserve obligation
