Position Title: Corrections EMS Clinician

Salary: $45,760-$66,560 per year commensurate with experience

Minimum Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalency and a minimum of two (2) years' clinical experience in a pre-hospital, hospital, clinic, healthcare, or correctional facility setting.
  • Current and valid PA EMT, Advanced EMT, or Paramedic certification required at the time of application.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Must have current CPR/BLS certification prior to appointment. Act 33/34 clearances are required prior to appointment.

Additionally, it is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status, and drug/medical examinations as required for the position. The pre-employment drug screen must be completed within 48 hours of the acceptance of the conditional offer of employment.


Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Director of Nursing, the Corrections EMS Clinician is responsible for assessing individuals entering the jail and identifying needs for medical treatment prior to acceptance into the facility. Once accepted, they continue to monitor medical needs during the intake process and respond to any medical emergencies in the intake areas. The Corrections EMS Clinician collaborates with all other medical staff (RN, LPNs, and Medical Providers) and corrections staff working in intake.



Overview:


Duties:

  • Assesses new detainees entering the jail to determine medical status and risk factors based on established assessment screening and physical presentation into the facility.
  • Establishes positive, trusting rapport with client base while asserting ethical boundaries.
  • Observes, reports, and objectively documents complaints or changes in the patient’s condition.
  • Assists in lifting/transferring non-ambulatory patients into and out of beds, chairs, lifts, wheelchairs.
  • Responds to facility emergencies in accordance with both PA certification and ACJ scope of practice.
  • Performs various treatments when needed in accordance with both PA certifications and ACJ scope of practice.
  • Maintains medical records and performs administrative tasks (i.e. answering phones, typing reports, escorting visitors etc.)
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Nursing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern correctional care.
  • Policies and procedures regarding patient safety infection control.
  • General medical technology.

Skill in:

  • MS Office Suite.

Ability to:

  • Work shifts in a 24/7 facility to include evening, night, and holiday shifts.
  • Effectively manage patient care and prioritize needs.
  • Accomplish work independently.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Resolve conflict and work respectfully with individuals who have been involved with the criminal justice systems.
  • Maintains client confidentiality in accordance with State and Federal regulations.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and manage multiple tasks in a stressful environment.

Residency: Not required to live in Allegheny County
