Position Title: Substance Use Recovery Nurse Coordinator

Salary: $70,000 - $74,682 per year

Minimum Requirements:

Graduation from an accredited nursing program and current Pennsylvania nursing licensure, either Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse. Knowledge of chemical dependence and range or efficacious treatment modalities is required. 

Two (2) years of experience in an inpatient/residential treatment setting, specifically relating to detoxification, medications for opioid use disorder, and harm reduction approaches are preferred. Correctional experience and an associate degree in nursing (ADN) or bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) are also preferred.

Applicants must have a current CPR/BLS certification prior to appointment. Registered nurses are also required to maintain a current RN licensure.

Act 33/34 clearances are required prior to appointment at the cost of the applicant.

It is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status, and drug/medical examinations as required for the position. The pre-employment drug screen must be completed within 48 hours of the acceptance of the conditional offer of employment.


Position Summary:

Reporting directly to the Director of Nursing and Director of Substance Use Programs, the Substance Use Recovery Nurse Coordinator supervises, directs, and coordinates detoxification services as well as coordinates the continuation of medication assisted treatments (i.e. buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, etc.) with extensive collaboration with the Medical Director and other Advanced Practitioners. The Substance Use Recovery Nurse Coordinator performs clinical services in accordance with federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations that govern correctional facilities and infection control reporting requirements. 



Overview:


Duties:

  • Assesses the patient population, utilizing clinical withdrawal scales, and monitoring their stability and progress.
  • Assesses the patient population to determine whether other services need consultation or referral including, but not limited to, Infectious Disease, Mental Health, etc.
  • Conducts medication pass related specifically to detoxification and/or opioid replacement therapies (i.e. buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone).
  • Consults with the Substance Use Unit and Discharge and Release Center for individuals who will be re-integrated into the community.
  • Works in the intake unit to provide initial assessments to the substance using population.
  • Collaborates with staff in the medical housing unit and supervises substance using patients.
  • Reviews and analyzes literature, makes recommendations, and consults with the Assistant Directors of Nursing on additional follow-up activities.
  • Develops training programs and education in collaboration with the Staffing Educator and other healthcare employees.
  • Liaises with other community stakeholder programs to ensure continuous partnership.
  • Analyzes and tracks trends within the patient population to inform the augmentation and development of programs and services.
  • Evaluates and analyzes the role of substances in medical emergencies or other sentinel events.
  • Develops policies and procedures for the withdrawing patients in collaboration with the Medical Director.
  • Monitors and observes detoxification practices and procedures and ensures that staff are following standard operating procedures.
  • Participates in meetings with surveyors and inspectors and responds to inquiries as needed.
  • Assists in the development of plans to address any opportunities for progression, as identified during the survey process.
  • Participates in conferences, including discharge conferences as needed, to address specific problems within the substance using patient.
  • Communicates and collaborates with interdisciplinary health care professionals, administrators, healthcare department representatives, and local, state, and federal regulatory agencies as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as required or requested.

  • Work alternate shifts as needed.
  • Ensure accountability 24 hours/day, 7 days per week.

Residency: Not required to live in Allegheny County
