Minimum Requirements:
  • High School Diploma AND one (1) year of related experience in mental health, social work, human services, or a medical field. Prior experience working in the mental health field or in a correctional setting is preferred. 
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

 

Must show proof of a current CPR/BLS certification prior to appointment. Act 33/34 clearances are required prior to appointment at the cost of the applicant.

Position Summary:

The Behavioral Health Rehabilitation Specialist reports directly to the Director of Mental Health Programs and works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary Behavioral Health treatment team and other sub-departments within the Healthcare Services department. The Behavioral Health Rehabilitation Specialist provides supportive psychosocial rehabilitative services and support to adult incarcerated persons experiencing behavioral health needs. This support is provided through the holistic provision of psychoeducation (individually and in a group setting) services and therapeutic interaction, including engagement with the incarcerated population, de-escalation, and crisis management.



Overview:


Duties:

  • Establishes positive, trusting rapport with patients while asserting ethical boundaries.
  • Participates in the implementation of interdisciplinary treatment plans.
  • Provides psychosocial rehabilitative services, individually and in groups, utilizing the recovery model of care.
  • Supports the interdisciplinary team by coordinating milieu rosters, appointments, releases of information, and care.
  • Completes physical checks and monitors patients for unusual behavior.
  • Reports observations to the appropriate staff and records in the electronic health record accordingly.
  • Maintains patient information within the electronic health record.
  • Assists patients with dressing, grooming, and bathing if clinically indicated.
  • Provides incarcerated individuals with routine physical, emotional, psychological, or rehabilitative care as directed by the nursing and healthcare staff.
  • Measures vital signs and performs routine procedures (i.e., collecting laboratory specimens, checking blood glucose, etc.)
  • Organizes, supervises, and encourages incarcerated individuals’ participation in counseling and other activities.
  • Assists in interviewing patients upon admission and records information.
  • Involves other correctional professionals & refers patients for additional services if needed.
  • Follows all procedures to maintain the safe provision of services within the institution.
  • Participates in treatment team meetings with other members of the Mental Health Department.
  • Maintains client confidentiality in accordance with State and Federal regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Tenants of behavioral health practices: recovery models, trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, case management.
  • Techniques and best practices to monitor and assist patients with mental health issues.
  • Psychosocial rehabilitation practices and principles.
  • Clinical documentation.

Skill in:

  • Microsoft Office products (i.e. Microsoft Office Software, Outlook, etc.)
  • Electronic Health Records.

Ability to:

  • Perform crisis intervention with behavioral health patients.
  • Interact with the incarcerated population in a patient, professional manner.
  • Seek creative solutions to enhance, develop, or augment services/programs within the institution.
  • Communicate effectively with healthcare providers and colleagues.
  • Perform physical tasks associated with inmate care.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of staff.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and manage multiple tasks in a stressful environment.
  • Work shifts within a 24/7 facility.
  • Maintain a detail-oriented focus and accuracy in completing work tasks.
  • Demonstrate strong problem-solving & organizational skills.
