Position Title: Medical Assistant Full and Part-time

*The Medical Assistant (PRN status) enjoys the flexibility of choosing the number of days, hours and shifts worked. In order to remain active, all PRN Employees will provide availability to work a minimum of three (3) shifts per month and must include evening, night, weekend and holiday availability. PRN staff are not eligible for County-provided health insurance benefits and certain other employee benefits.



Minimum Requirements:

High School Diploma or its equivalent AND completion of an approved Medical Assistant program.

Previous relevant work experience is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Must have current CPR/BLS certification at time of appointment. Act 33/34 clearances are required prior to appointment at the cost of the applicant.

Candidates offered full-time employment will be eligible for a signing bonus and retention payments totaling $1,000 payable over a one-year period. Terms and conditions of the program will be provided at time of interview.

It is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status, and drug/medical examinations as required for the position. The pre-employment drug screen must be completed within 48 hours of the acceptance of the conditional offer of employment.


Position Summary:

The Medical Assistant is responsible for monitoring vital signs and administratively and operationally assisting in the day to day nursing operations of the Allegheny County Jail Medical Unit. 



Overview:


Duties:

  • Monitors vital signs.
  • Phones verification of medications and medical information.
  • Prepares and maintains examination and treatment areas.
  • Performs various treatments when needed (i.e., tuberculin skin tests, EKG readings, etc.)
  • Performs blood draws.
  • Maintains medical records.
  • Performs administrative tasks (i.e., answering phones, typing reports, escorting visitors, etc.)
  • Obtains specimens as directed.

Knowledge of:

  • Nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern correctional care.
  • Established policies and procedures regarding infection control.
  • Medical terminology

Skill in:


Ability to:

  • Interact with inmates
  • Make independent decisions when warranted
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Effectively communicate with jail administrative and medical management, patients, colleagues and other stakeholders.
  • Work shifts in a 24/7 facility.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and manage multiple tasks in a stressful environment.
