Position Title: Licensed Practical Nurse

* The Licensed Practical Nurse (PRN status) enjoys the flexibility of choosing the number of days, hours and shifts worked. In order to remain active, all PRN Employees will provide availability to work a minimum of three (3) shifts per month and must include evening, night, weekend and holiday availability. PRN staff are not eligible for County-provided health insurance benefits and certain other employee benefits.



Minimum Requirements:

Graduation from an approved Licensed Practical Nursing program and current Pennsylvania LPN licensure or Temporary Practice Permit.

Experience working as an LPN is preferred.

Must have current CPR/BLS certification prior to appointment.

Candidates offered full-time employment will be eligible for a signing bonus and retention payments totaling $4,000 payable over a two-year period. Terms and conditions of the program will be provided at time of interview.

Act 33/34 clearances are required prior to appointment at the cost of the applicant.

It is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status, and drug/medical examinations as required for the position. The pre-employment drug screen must be completed within 48 hours of the acceptance of the conditional offer of employment.


Position Summary:


The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for providing medications and treatments and assisting RN's and other supervising staff in executing medical care to inmates of the Allegheny County Jail. 



Overview:


Duties:

  • Provides medications and treatments to inmates to meet their physical and psychosocial needs.
  • Observes each inmate's physical and emotional status and notifies RN or appropriate supervisor when there is a significant change in condition.
  • Prepares and administers medications as ordered by physician in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that medication and narcotic records are completed accurately and in accordance with established policies; reports discrepancies to supervisor.
  • Keeps thorough documentation on all procedures.
  • Responds to emergencies according to scope of practice.
  • Assists RNs and Physicians as requested.
  • Reports all incidents and files timely reports in accordance with established procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as required or requested.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern correctional health care.
  • Established policies and procedures regarding infection control.

Skills:

  • Preparing and administering medications.
  • Performing treatments.
  • IV Therapy.
  • Performing blood draws.

Skill in:


Ability to:

  • Interact with inmates.
  • Make independent decisions when warranted.
  • Assist in planning, organizing, developing, implementing, and interpreting programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for providing quality care.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, jail administrative and medical management, and other stakeholders.
  • Work shifts in 24/7 facility.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and manage multiple tasks in a stressful environment.
