* The Registered Nurse (PRN status) enjoys the flexibility of choosing the number of days, hours and shifts worked. In order to remain active, all PRN Employees will provide availability to work a minimum of three (3) shifts per month and must include evening, night, weekend and holiday availability. PRN staff are not eligible for County-provided health insurance benefits and certain other employee benefits.



Minimum Requirements:

Graduation from an accredited nursing program and current Pennsylvania RN licensure or Temporary Practice Permit. 

Professional nursing experience in a hospital, clinic, health care or correctional facility is preferred. 

Must have current CPR/BLS certification prior to appointment.

Candidates offered full-time employment will be eligible for a signing bonus and retention payments totaling $6,000 paid over a two-year period. Terms and conditions of the program will be provided at time of interview. 

Act 33/34 clearances are required prior to appointment at the cost of the applicant.

It is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status, and drug/medical examinations as required for the position. The pre-employment drug screen must be completed within 48 hours of the acceptance of the conditional offer of employment.


Position Summary:


The Registered Nurse is responsible for carrying out prescribed medical treatments and therapies as determined by physicians and other supervising positions within the Allegheny County Jail Medical Unit. 



Overview:


Duties:

  • Administers all nursing-related processes and procedures to ensure quality nursing care which promotes, maintains and restores the well-being of all inmates/patients.
  • Ensures daily staff assignments of MAs and LPNs are implemented in accordance with patients' care plans.
  • Accurately carries out physicians' orders in accordance with established nursing policies and procedures; administers medications, treatments and therapies.
  • Collaborates with physicians while making rounds to validate the accurate interpretation and processing of diagnostic and therapeutic orders.
  • Assesses, plans, monitors, and evaluates the delivery of care and activity by utilizing shift report, medical record, direct observation, and feedback from others in providing inmate care.
  • Assesses at-risk inmates, determines any changes required in treatment regime.
  • Performs health assessments on newly incarcerated inmates.
  • Documents all information required in accordance with state, facility and nursing policies and guidelines, accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Starts, monitors, and maintains IV's.
  • Responds to emergencies according to scope of practice.
  • Ensures strict compliance with all regulations associated with the pharmacy and the dispensing of medication.
  • Performs other related duties as required or requested.

  • Nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern correctional health care.
  • Established policies and procedures regarding infection control.

  • Preparing and administering medications.
