Position Title: Infection Preventionist

Salary: $60,465.00 - $87,796.80 per year based on licensure

Minimum Requirements:
  • A Registered Nurse (RN) who has earned a diploma or degree in Nursing, or
  • A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) who has earned a diploma in Nursing, or
  • A medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist who has earned at least an associate’s degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science, or
  • A microbiologist who has earned at least a bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or Epidemiology.

 

Must be able to meet state requirements for relevant licensures or certification prior to appointment.

 

Must have education, training, experience, or certification in infection control prevention, OR must be able to complete specialized training in infection prevention and control through accredited continued education.

 

 

It is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status, and drug/medical examinations as required for the position. The pre-employment drug screen must be completed within 48 hours of the acceptance of the conditional offer of employment. 


Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Nursing, the Infection Preventionist develops, implements, and maintains a facility-wide infection prevention and control program. Cooperates with the ICC (Infection Control Coordinator) to execute the aforementioned. The current vacancies are located within the Glen Hazel and Scott Township facilities. 



Overview:


Duties:

  • Develops and implements an ongoing infection prevention and control program to prevent, recognize, and control the onset and spread of infections in order to provide a safe, sanitary, and comfortable environment.
  • Establishes facility-wide standard operating procedures and protocols for the prevention, identification, reporting, investigation, and control of infections and communicable diseases of residents, staff, and visitors.
  • Develops and implements written policies and procedures in accordance with current standards of practice and recognized guidelines for infection prevention and control.
  • Maintains accountability for the facility’s antibiotic stewardship program.
  • Oversees, monitors, and reports on resident care activities that increase risk of infection (i.e., use and care of urinary catheters, wound care, incontinence care, skin care, point-of-care blood testing, and medication injections).
  • Leads the facility’s Infection and Prevention Control Committee; develops action plans to address opportunities for improvement.
  • Participates in the facility’s Quality Analysis Performance Improvement (QAPI) Committee (i.e., meetings, discussions, task takeaways, reporting, etc.)
  • Implements an annual infection control risk assessment process and participates in the facility’s annual assessment review process.
  • Reviews and/or revises the facility’s infection prevention and control program, its standards, policies, and procedures annually and as needed for changes to the facility assessment to ensure they are effective and in accordance with current standards of practice for preventing and controlling infections.
  • Provides education related to infection prevention and control principles, policies, and procedures to staff, residents, and families (where appropriate).
  • Ensures the appropriate health agencies are notified of reportable diseases.
  • Collaborates with other facility departments in fulfilling requirements related to occupational health and safety.
  • Maintains documentation of infection prevention and control program activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • HIPAA, CDC, and OSHA guidelines, and other Federal and State regulations governing long-term care facilities and infection control issues.
  • Standard precautions regarding blood/body fluids and clean-up procedures.
  • Infectious diseases, particularly those common to nursing facilities.
  • CDC National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). 

Skill in:

  • Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Electronic Health Record (EHR).  

Ability to:

  • Track trends in infection prevention.
  • Effectively interpret and explain statistical data and information regarding infection issues.
  • Utilize the CDC National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) and the McGreer criteria for reporting purposes.   
  • Communicate effectively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, nursing and medical staff, residents, family members, public officials, and the public.
  • Understand written and oral instructions.
  • Promote and maintain positive relationships with residents, families, staff, and the community.



Residency: Allegheny County within 1 year.
