Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or forensic science from an accredited institution. Other education, training, or experience may not be substituted for the minimum required education.
- Original college transcript(s) required at time of application that includes the completion of general and organic chemistry with associated laboratory classes (minimum 16 hours).
Preferred Education, Training, and Experience:
- Master’s degree in chemistry or related science.
- Chemistry coursework including analytical chemistry and instrumental analysis.
- Training in a forensic laboratory, preferably in environmental science or trace evidence.
- Independent casework experience in environmental science or trace evidence.
- Knowledge of handling of evidence, chain of custody, and courtroom testimony.
- Knowledge of ISO 17025 Accreditation Standards.
- Knowledge of BEAST laboratory information management system.

Position Summary:
Under the supervision and guidance of the Laboratory Manager, the Scientist –Trace and Environmental Chemistry is an entry-level position in the Forensic Science Laboratory. The incumbent performs scientific analysis on environmental samples to include air quality and food safety as well as trace evidence samples which include but are not limited to: hairs, fibers, paint, gunshot residue, ignitable liquids, explosives, and unknown chemicals. The incumbent also testifies in court as to the results obtained, interpretation of the results, and chain of custody of evidence.
Overview:
Duties:
- Analyzes environmental and trace evidence samples.
- Accepts evidence and assumes chain of custody for evidence submitted to the laboratory.
- Prepares reports for use in the criminal justice system or public safety and health awareness.
- Routinely prepares and handles chemical reagents.
- Utilizes instrumentation including GC/MS, GC/FID, gravimetric balances, and microscopes.
- Responsible for maintenance of instruments and preparation of chemical reagents.
- Performs technical/administrative reviews of other qualified Scientists’ casework.
- Testifies in court when requested.
- Conducts or participates in training sessions, professional organizations, and seminars as requested for new employee training, employee continuing education, and community events.
- Performs other departmental duties, including research, validation, quality control, quality assurance, safety, training, proficiency testing, and other responsibilities as directed by the Laboratory Manager or Laboratory Director.
- Fulfills elements of the Quality Management System commensurate with job duties and experience.

- Gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, and infrared spectroscopy.
- Quality management and accreditation in association with forensic laboratories.
- Scientific methodology and general laboratory safety practices.
