Position Title: Senior Deputy Director of Public Outreach and Staff Development

Salary: $97,500 per year

Minimum Requirements:

J.D. from an accredited law school AND an existing license to practice law in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Candidates must also have experience managing the day-to-day operations in a legal environment.

Applicants who meet the above requirements and have experience in hiring, communications, and public relations are preferred.

Duties:

  • Leads staffing and employee development programs for the needs of an interdisciplinary Office Public Defender, recruiting attorneys, social workers, investigators, paralegals, secretaries, and other staff.   
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with professional schools, community groups, leaders, and other organizations.   
  • Develops and maintains organizational social media accounts for OPD messaging and outreach.   
  • Oversees public events such as expungement clinics, recruitment fairs, “know your rights” events, and resource drives.   
  • Supervises the manager of Diversity Equity and Inclusion and implements anti-racist hiring and retention practices.   
  • Works with the Chief Public Defender, Chief Deputy Public Defender, and County Communications Department to craft messaging consistent with the values and mission of the OPD.   
  • Manages intern programs and related logistical matters.   
  • Works to enhance statewide Public Defender network.  
  • Identify and determine causes of problems and develop recommendations for improvement of organization's policies and practices. 
  • Represents as many clients as the workload will permit.   
  • Performs additional duties as requested by the Director.  

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Pennsylvania Rules of Criminal Procedure, Rules of Appellate Procedure, Rules of Evidence, and other applicable law. 
  • Allegheny County Criminal Court. 
  • Current Pennsylvania Continuing Legal Education rules, requirements, and programs. 
  • Programs necessary to coordinate recruitment efforts with the county and with outside entities. 
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. 

Skill in:

  • PC operations and programs to include Westlaw, Lexis, Word, Excel, and other related software, such as case management software. 

Ability to:

  • Create a physical and emotional environment that fosters inclusion and professional development. 
  • Clearly present information and ideas. 
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 
  • Responsibly manage attorneys and other professional and administrative staff. 
  • Work cooperatively and constructively with staff. 
  • Represent the Office of the Public Defender at appearances before civic groups, schools, and community events. 

Residency: Allegheny County within 1 year.
