Position Title: Deputy Director (Sustainability)

Salary: $82,000- $87,000 per year

Minimum Requirements:

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Planning, Public Policy, Sustainable Business, or a closely related field. 
  • At least five (5) years of work experience in a combination of environmental policies, facility operations, sustainability planning, climate-related initiatives, program development, and grant writing and administration.
  • Direct supervisory experience is required.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Department Director, the Deputy Director manages the daily operations of the Department and oversees current department activities such as waste diversion, sustainable procurement, utility data tracking, and grant applications. This position requires coordination with additional county departments, local utility companies, and other external stakeholders. Projects include oversight of the county’s employee Green Team, incorporating alternative fuels into the county fleet, and installation of renewable energy systems and electric vehicle charging stations. The Deputy Director advises on policies for the Department and will coordinate, along with the Director, implementation of the county’s Climate Action Plan.  



Overview:


Duties:

  • Oversees the county’s utility management software, including its use in data-driven decisions for low-cost or no-cost efficiency projects, as well as capital investments.
  • Coordinates county participation in regional sustainability initiatives, including the Pittsburgh 2030 District and the Sustainable Pittsburgh Workplace Designation.
  • Provides support to other county departments on sustainability initiatives.
  • Secures grants and other assistance from foundations, government agencies, and other organizations.
  • Develops, tracks, and monitors implemented measures across County departments.
  • Collaborates with other organizations, businesses, and municipalities to encourage, support, and facilitate sustainability initiatives.
  • Assists sustainability staff in leading the county employee Green Team through education, trainings, and project coordination.
  • Supervises the day-to-day operations of the Department, including sustainability department staff.
  • Performs other related duties as required or requested.

  • Create and implement appropriate management systems that track and measure sustainability program effects.
  • Quickly assess large amounts of information and data while considering and evaluating the relationships between numerous factors.

  • Provide responsible leadership and obtain support for the implementation of department objectives, strategies, and goals.
