Position Title: Park Ranger

Salary: $45,000 per year

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Parks and Recreation, Biology, Environmental Science, Education, or a related degree and one (1) year of related experience and/or training. 
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, or experience is acceptable.

Must possess current, valid certification in first aid and CPR at time of hire.

Must possess current, valid Class C driver’s license at time of hire.

Position Summary:

Under general supervision of the Education and Outreach coordinator, this position will primarily be responsible for developing and presenting outreach programming and creating lasting relationships with local school districts, park partners, and local civic organizations in order to promote the Allegheny County Park Ranger’s mission. This position is additionally responsible for providing information and other customer services to visitors of the County parks and promoting recreation and safe utilization of the parks in accordance with applicable provisions of the Allegheny County Code of Ordinances. This position will take on supervisory duties in the absence of the Education and Outreach Coordinator. This position will be responsible for the management of the divisions uniform purchasing, sizing and distribution. 



Overview:


Duties:

  • Assists in outreach program coordination and serves as the Ranger’s representative for outreach programs.
  • Assists in writing program curriculum and developing program guides to provide to local schools.
  • Assists in the development of educational material and publications that interpret and promote the park’s natural, cultural, and recreational resources. 
  • Develops and present a variety of informational presentations for schools, civic groups and others as requested, as well as interpretive, theme-based formal and informal programs including orientation talks, guided hikes, conducted activities, cultural demonstrations, and education and outreach programs.
  • Assists with large scale special events by providing logistical support and programmatic assistance. 
  • Learns about park resources by reviewing published maps, research materials, and other documents.
  • Assists in providing Seasonal Park Rangers with guidance for interpretive and educational program development.
  • Provides information and answer questions from visitors about park resources, facilities, environmental features and history of County parks; provide maps and directions.
  • Explains Park rules and regulations to the public and gain compliance through education.
  • Monitors parks and natural areas through resource management practices to ensure that natural and man-made hazards are identified and corrected.
  • Performs regular checks of grounds, buildings, and park facilities for vandalism, damage, safety hazards and cleanliness, and report problems and areas of concern to appropriate parties.
  • Reports complaints and/or incidents involving the public to appropriate public safety personnel.
  • Leads groups of volunteers on a variety of projects including but not limited to: trail work, plantings, invasive species removal and park clean-ups. 
  • Compiles statistics as required; maintains required records and prepares reports as necessary.
  • Conducts uniform sizing, purchasing, and distribution for division.
  • Performs other related duties as required or requested. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Outreach program development.
  • State curriculum guidelines and ability to develop appropriate programming according to those guidelines.
  • Outdoor recreation and education.
  • Interpretive and education program development, presentation skills, and implementation.
  • Environmental features and natural resources that exist within County Parks.
  • History and geography of the parks.
  • Principles and practices of public facility operation and maintenance.
  • Volunteer management. 

Skill in:

  • Methods and techniques for applying first aid and CPR.
  • Microsoft Office Suite 

Ability to:

  • Act as a park ambassador and provide accurate and responsive information to park visitors.
  • Work closely with the Education and Outreach Coordinator to develop park curriculum, interpretive programming and educational material and publications.
  • Serve as the Park Rangers representative for many community special events and outreach activities. 
  • Establish effective working relationships with managers, co-workers, and public safety personnel in order to ensure that hazards and safety concerns are addressed and resolved so that visitors have safe and enjoyable experiences within the parks.
  • Learn Park history, logistics and environmental and recreational features within the parks.
  • Tactfully administer park rules and regulations.
  • Stand and walk long distances for prolonged periods of time daily, climb and descend steep inclines, engage in frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.
  • Wear issued uniform and represent the County Parks in a professional manner according to the Park Ranger Division Guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Communicate with and manage volunteers.
  • Work outside in all types of weather, resulting in exposure to extreme cold, heat and humidity, rain, wind, direct sunlight, etc.
  • Work flexible work schedules at different park locations.
  • Assist Park visitors who may be in distress by administering first aid and/or CPR.

Residency: Allegheny County within 1 year.
