Position Title: Sustainability Specialist

Salary: $50,000 - $55,000 per year

Minimum Requirements:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree and (1) one year of work experience in sustainability or sustainable business, including policy development and implementation, circular economy best practices, procurement, climate action, or similar function.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Sustainability Manager, this position will coordinate sustainability-related activities and implementation of policies with a focus on sustainable procurement and purchasing policies, but will also assist with other sustainable operation priorities, including department data and metrics tracking to support success. The incumbent in this position will be expected to gain an understanding of government operations and will be part of continued development and implementation of the county’s Sustainable Operations Roadmap, a key component of the county’s Climate Action Plan. 



Overview:


Duties:

  • Directs implementation of the Sustainable and Socially Responsible Procurement Ordinance, including the Green Cleaning Policy and support of our Sustainable Procurement Policy.
  • Coordinates sustainable procurement efforts with the county’s Purchasing Division, including review of new contracting and purchasing requests, review and adjustment of existing policies, and supporting compliance with existing policies.
  • Assists department in development, tracking, and monitoring of successful implementation of sustainable measures across county operations focusing on identification of relevant data, creating standard tracking processes, and identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Develops and supports employee education of sustainability best practices including contributing to regular internal training, newsletters, lunch and learn planning, and general resource development.
  • Partners with department staff to secure grants and other assistance from foundations, government agencies, and other organizations.
  • Coordinates a countywide effort to develop and implement sustainability best management practices, standards, and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Environmental sustainability as it interacts with the business triple bottom line of social equity, environment, and economy and climate action strategies and actions as it pertains to operational decisions.
  • General procurement practices and sustainability best practices within purchasing: including implementation, program coordination, and education.
  • Third-party certifications, including LEED, Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Forest Stewardship Council, WELL, Living Building Challenge, TRUE, EPA Safer Choice, Green Seal, ECOLOGO, etc.
  • Current federal, state, and local environmental regulations and policies.

Skill in:

  • Microsoft Office Suite, including high-level intermediate functionality of Excel.
  • Identifying, applying for, and managing grants or funding sources.

Ability to:

  • Quickly assess large amounts of information and data; consider and evaluate the relationships between numerous factors.
  • Think strategically and plan, organize, coordinate, and manage procurement practices and programs of a large and diversified organization.
  • Communicate clearly and persuasively both orally and in writing.
  • Be a team member and motivate and educate others.
  • Be self-motivated, organized, and have ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.

Residency: Allegheny County within 1 year.
